Fortune Shumba was born and raised in South Africa, in a little township called Kabokweni in the Nelspruit region. He began professionally recording music in 2013. His influences include Bjork, Busi Mhlongo, Prince, Brenda Fassie and Sade amongst others.
His first project was a mixtape called “Fame and Fortune” followed by a second mixtape “Ngoma Yam” both released in 2013 independently.
In 2015 his debut EP “Dawn” was released on Soundcloud independently to great reviews from the media. The follow up was an EP called “Daylight” with an accompanying visual released via POST POST music, run by Tshepang Ramoba of The BLK JKS who discovered Fortune online after the release of Dawn.
Fortune has sung the theme song of local hit TV series “It’s complicated” and had his music featured on the show multiple times.
He has been featured in the past on publications such as Afropunk, OkayAfrica, Djolo, City Press, Koolout, The times and many other reputable publications.
He has played live shows at the SA showcase and Swiss Showcase of SXSW in 2016, has played at the Lyric theatre in SA where he is based, Arte no parke in Mozambique and Sibebe Friday at House on Fire in Swaziland amongst others.
He is currently recording two projects- an EP and full length album and has worked on some songs with Swiss musician Dejot for a possible 2017 release.
